Early Math Matters

Young children demonstrate a natural interest in exploring "everyday" mathematical concepts. They count steps as they walk up stairs, create patterns with different coloured materials, build towers with blocks, and comment that one tower is taller than the other.

A children's inclination to collect and sort items by their attributes is key component of the ability to represent, analyse and interpret mathematical data.

These early explorations and engagement in associated thinking processes serve as foundations for learning as children continue towards more formal understanding.

In the toddler years, children begin to develop early math skills. They can be motivated in the process of discovery by introducing ideas like:

  • Number Sense
  • Representation
  • Spatial sense
  • Measurement
  • Estimation
  • Patterns
  • Problem-solving
